The Kane County Democratic Women (KCDW) will host a forum on “The Environmental Drift!” on Thursday, July 27, 2023, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Kane County Government Center, Building A, 719 S. Batavia Ave., Geneva, IL.

The purpose of the forum is to bring the community together to create awareness of herbicides and lawn applications that are sprayed in the environment and signs that these chemicals are drifting into other areas and affecting vegetable gardens, trees, and native plants and possibly our health. The presentation will include PowerPoint slides that show the effects of herbicides, and attendees will learn about the broken regulatory system and ways community members can advocate for change. Several weeks later, a tour of the speaker’s property is available to see firsthand the effects of chemical drift on keystone oak trees that are 100 to 200 years old.  Our forum speakers include:

  • Sue Styer: Sue grew up in a family of gardeners. She is a retired science teacher who teaches local community classes on gardening and composting as a volunteer. Sue grows vegetables and native plants and does natural areas restoration.
  • Patti Hirsch: Patti grew up on a family dairy farm that also raised vegetables. Patti volunteers at a local community garden where she teaches people how to grow their own food and how to compost, while helping them to reconnect with nature through natural areas restoration activities.

The forum is free and open to the public. Questions regarding the Women & Power Speaker Series or the Kane County Democratic Women can be sent to KCDW Chair, Carolyn Bird Salazar at kcdw@kcdwomen.com

Annual Aurora American Legion Golf Outing @ Tamarack Golf Club
Sep 21 @ 10:30 am – 6:30 pm

Thank you for your support of the 3rd Annual Roosevelt Aurora Golf Outing.  These past two years have been a lot of fun and your generosity has helped keep the Roosevelt Aurora Post 84 of the American Legion thriving. The funds raised from this golf outing is used to help active duty service members, Veterans and their families.  Post 84 has a scholarship program, works with the food pantries to help distribute food to our Veterans, participate in annual events that honor of Veterans and much more.

We have been so successful we recently outgrew our old office and have relocated into a bigger and more functional office at 1649 Montgomery Road, Suite 7 in Aurora.  We invite you to stop by.  However, we cannot continue without your help.  Please consider becoming a sponsor or buying a foursome to golf and help us to continue to provide assistance to the Aurora area Veterans.

On behalf of Roosevelt Aurora Post 84 of the American Legion, we welcome you to our 2023 Golf Classic at a new golf course location.

Since 1919, Post 84 has been an integral participant of the Fox Valley community.  We remain dedicated to our support and service to our local Veterans, families and community

Mike Eckburg, Commander Post 84

KCDW Hosts: What the Health? Forum @ Batavia Public Library
Oct 21 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

kcdw what the health flyerweb 092223 768x994

The Kane County Democratic Women are excited to share our upcoming healthcare panel discussion, “What the Health?” on Sat. Oct. 21st at the Batavia Public Library 10:00 AM -12:00 Noon.

We will examine how COVID exposed existing inequities in the US healthcare system, revealing the ongoing need to improve and reform healthcare access in order to achieve health equity, including the Social Determinants of Health and the intersection of current social issues, such as Addiction, Aging, Climate Justice, Debt, Disability Rights, Domestic Violence, Gun Violence, Jobs, Immigration, Housing, Inflation, LGBTQ+ Rights, Mental Health, Poverty, Racism, and Reproductive Rights, as they relate to healthcare disparity.

This is a great opportunity to ask an expert panel questions like:
How can we improve access to healthcare by eliminating barriers for patients, and healthcare providers?

Why is our US healthcare system so complicated and dysfunctional for families, and society as a whole?

Who is affected the most by current inequities in healthcare?

When did healthcare become so expensive in the US?
