The Republican mantra regarding the bill is: “Americans show ID every single day. You want to buy a beer? You need to show an ID. You want to get on a plane? You need to show a photo ID,” … “If you want to cash a check, you need to show a photo ID. Voting should be equally important to show a photo ID.”
Except that purchasing a beer, or getting onto a plane does not require proof of citizenship.
Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act (“SAVE Act”) (H.R. 8281)
The SAVE Act would bar Americans from registering to vote with their driver’s licenses. The SAVE Act’s burdens are extreme—most Americans would no longer be able to register to vote using their driver’s license or other state-provided identification alone.
It is a direct attack on voter rights and a deliberate attempt to prevent people from exercising their right to vote by creating financial and access to information barriers.
